Question Three: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Legal Download WebsiteI would aim my OTS at forms of legal downloading/streaming websites such as brit films because it would be a good way to share and develop ideas for young film makers. By doing it this way, more of my audience will be able to see it as i am basing it for those with prior film experience so they'll know which websites are trusted and good, and also as its based at a younger generation, using the web will be a better use of my OTS than say using a DVD where people might not be bothered to watch it.
The internet now-a-days is a very useful tool as someone viewing my OTS could be doing multiple things at once, watch it where ever they have internet access, and if they loose it they can find it easily. This is contrasted in the use of DVDs as they're not replaced easily and they require a television and DVD player. Now that technology has evolved, film lovers could even watch my OTS on their phones. |
Production CompanyMy OTS would be targeted at the niche market and therefore a production company such as Warp Film would be the most appropriate. Warp are an independent British production company who specialise in hard hitting dramas, often dark or with some form of twist, in England and the UK. This Is England is part of Warp films and as its one of the films our OTS is modelled on, i believe it would be the best production company to aim the film at.

Marketing, Promotion and Budget. For the budget side of things i would enter competitions hosted by film making companies such as Film Four. I could also apply for funding from the National Lottery and enter my film in film festivals and galleries.
Social networking sites are a great way for those on a low budget like myself. Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr can all either post links to films or create embedded videos on your page. This would enable me to reach my audience of young people and it would also be a good persuasive device to try and make them watch and support my film. Blogs would also be another good way to promote my film as on websites such as Tumblr, HTML coding can be used to embed adverts onto one's blog. As radio and television would cost far too much, I would have to rely on simple and more manual means of promotion, than advertising it commercially. |
Strengths and Weaknesses
CostOne thing which could cause problems in making my film would be if i couldn't receive the funding i needed. This would mean i couldn't create the film as its a very costly business and it'd be relying fully on other companies.
On the other hand, the low budget could pose a positive for my film as it would require any costs to exhibit my piece as its done online. Further more, if the budget is lower, less money can be lost if the film doesn't perform as well, which for someone making their first film, is a big help. |
AccessA negative of streaming Scarlet Symphony online for download is that only those with a computer/laptop and internet. This would be more of a problem if my film didn't have a specific audience, if it was based for more fun loving viewers as opposed to film fanatics. However, my OTS is aimed at people with prior experience of Film Noir and probably of the niche market, therefore they would know where to find online films and they'd probably have internet access as they're of a young age.

PaceAs our budget would be low, the pace of the process would be slow. It would take a long time to gain funding from different corporations and also i would habe to put money into the film festivals to get it back out again. This means that i would also have to wait to build up an audience and a fan base as i don't have a big company behind me to advertise my film on the TV.
Even though this would be seen as a problem, there wouldn't be as much pressure on release as there would be for a box office movie. |
Technical RestrictionsOne of the main technical restrictions would be the fact that streaming and downloading a film online requires a very fast internet speed and a powerful computer. This would cost even more money to fund and also could make the pace of the distribution and exhibition even slower.
One negative of exhibiting my film online is that it could buffer slowly, aggravating the audience where as something such as a DVD wouldn't do so. However, if my audience are film fanatics, we could infer that they'd have equipment which would enable them to download films quickly. |
Aesthetic restrictionsThe frame rate of the film could be restricted as less expensive and less technical equipment would produce a lower frame rate and therefore a more grainy film. Although this could pose a threat to other films, my OTS has a sepia and grainy effect already in place on it to add mystery and an old feeling.
Also, most aesthetic problems wouldn't occur to my film as its been made in a way which celebrates the 'messy' way in which film can look. |
